AFG 3.1 AE Elliptical is a Smart Choice
By Head of Household
I did a lot of research before settling on this AFG 3.1 AE elliptical machine. This machine is highly rated by Consumer Reports, comparing it to machines that are over three-thousand dollars. A top requirement for me was a high quality, sturdy machine. According to Consumer Reports this is the best one-thousand dollar machine that they rated. A quick trip to the local Sears for a test drive confirmed that for me. This elliptical machine can be purchased at Sears and directly from the AFG website in addition to here at Amazon. The prices were all the same at the time of my purchase.
Installation instructions were nearly perfect. After placing all the parts out on the floor, I was able to put this elliptical together while watching a Steelers football game. I even took time out to eat during halftime. The packaging of the nuts and bolts is excellent. Each step in the installation process is separately packaged.
One point of confusion was the statement to connect all three wires going into the display panel. One flat connection had to be made to the printed wiring board plus three other wire to wire connections. Just go ahead and connect all wires coming out of the base.
The only other installation issue was when you have to put a rubber boot over the area where the handles meet the base. Just use force to push it on and it will eventually slide over the bottom of the arms.
You are going to want to build this where it is going to sit because it it heavy. The box says 225 lbs and it feels like it. I used a dolly to get it into my house from the car. If you are going to load it into your car to bring it home from Sears, note that the box is 50" x 23" x 32". Once installed, the footprint is 73" x 23". It comes with a standard 3-pronged six-foot power cord that connects to the front of the machine.
I cannot speak to its long term reliability, but I will update this review if needed later on. I can tell you that this unit is sturdy and does not rock or move while you are riding it. It appears to be a high quality, heavy machine. I will not repeat all the features you can read about on the AFG website. At this point I am very happy with this AFG 3.1 AE elliptical.

A great product, when it's working.
By NF
First off, for the price, it is an excellent value. It's as stable as any high end and higher priced elliptical trainer. It runs very smooth and quiet. Although heavy, it can still be moved around due to the wheels in the front and and sturdy lift points in the rear. The display is very simple to program and does store previous run info for 2 users. It does also have a guest option as well. It has a port for an 1/8" jack with wire to plug in any mp3 player or ipod.
Built in programs are very good. The only negative is that there are no programs that utilize inclines, you would have to step up to the AFG 4.1 for such programs. However, it does have a customizable program that I used to make my own workout that includes inclines and it is exceptionally easy to use. I love it.
It's one MAJOR flaw is it's durability and reliability. There are simply too many issues with this machine. The first week using it, it developed and very nasty creaking sound that drove me crazy. After calling AFG, they sent me a part that wouldn't fit. Regardless, it wouldn't have mattered anyway since I was able to finally troubleshoot and repair it myself. It turned out to be a joint in the lower control arm that needed greasing. About 2 weeks later, the display stopped working as far as showing calories and distance traveled. Called AFG who responded by sending me the necessary parts to make the repairs. Fortunately, I was able to repair it myself without using any of their parts. I discovered that the fly wheel had a sensor that was loose and thus too far from the flywheel magnet to send a signal to the console. Adjusted it and, once again I was back in business. The most recent problem now is the resistance levels are inoperable so although the machine works, it only works at no resistance and there is thus no muscle toning effect. I have called AFG once again and still waiting for the technician to come make the necessary repairs. It's almost a week now and have not heard from anyone, meanwhile I have a giant paper weight in my basement. If the tech had simply left the faulty part in the machine, it could have still been usable as a cardio device. What's stupid about removing that part is that the tech didn't even take it with him, I found it the next day in the cup holder. Since it's outside of the 30 day warranty replacement warranty through Amazon, I cannot send it back so I have to continue working with AFG on this matter. I must say I am very disappinted in this product. A quality looking machine that runs smoothly when operable, it's just not very reliable, at least not for me.
Their customer service does seem to try to work with you to resolve problems, at least initially, based on the many calls I have placed to them. They are not exactly effective in correcting problems, for example sending parts that don't fit or even dispatching repairmen who refuse to come, but they get an A for effort and they do call back when you leave a message most of the time.
Minus the reliability issues, I would have easily given this product 4 stars at minimum. But for 4-5 stars, it has to work continuously for more than a month. Would the AFG 3.1, The perception of quality is clearly there, but it simply has to be a durable quality and that is where this falls short.
4/16/13 Update. Over a week later waiting for a part to have repaired under warranty that still has not arrived.
4/18/13 Update: After a visit on 4/8/13, parts were ordered which I will not receive until 4/22/13 and it's been very frustrating to say the least.
As of May 9, my elliptical is finally up and running and we are happy...for now. After installing the servo to correct the resistance failure, it works but the resistance levels are harder than they used to be. We called it in and they sent us some MORE parts and sent a request for on site repair. However, I decided to live with the way it is now. I look at it this way, the more resistance, the greater the workout. It also developed a nasty creak again in the front but I located the source and greased it up and now it's gone. I can live with this.

Sturdy Machine / Lacks Technology
By Prinz Fred
I bought this machine based on Consumer Report Recommendation, Amazon Reviews, and Price, however, was leery of all the claims of squeaky machines.
I use this machine multiple times per week and am about 6'2 - 220 lbs and my teenage daughters also use frequently. It NOW works great with no squeaks, is fairly easy to use, has a smooth range of motion, and fairly stable. It did squeak after assembly, so I took the whole things apart and smeared hi temp automative grease onto and around all of the swivel points. The white lithium grease that some purchased on Amazon is NOT a good alternative as it just removes the little grease that comes with packing and does not last long.
You can hook up a phone, ipod, mp3, to speaker jack which has ok quality. Has a good heart rate monitor (polar) with it.
The GOOD:
- Good Steady Machine, with good range of motion, and great workout!
- Highly rated on Consumer Report
- Comes with Polar Heartrate monitor strap (one of the best in the business) with good feedback
- Cable to hook-up music, phone, ipod, ipad, etc.
- Available workout options, calorie, heartbeat, etc.
- Price - Not Gym quality machine, but much better than many home use ones
- Fairly easy to set-up by myself (maybe 45 minutes)
The BAD:
- The machine should come with more grease on swivels or instructions to add. Having to dismantle the unit a second time to add and rebuild was a annoying
- No Gel on footrests, after 45-60 minute work my feet begin to fall asleep and have to take a short break
- Technology on unit, screen, etc. feel 10 years old compared to some other units with touch or video screens
- Connection "iphone" compatible, but not 30 pin connector just headphone jack
- Although prime indicated 2 day delivery, took more like a week plus with coordination with local delivery person. That person did bring into the house, so kudos since I was not home.
At the end of the day a good workout, stable well-built machine, good price, adequate, but limited feedback make this a solid 3-4 stars for home use. If you put the grease on initially, this will work great!
If you prefer more high tech options, have feet problems, this unit would not be for you.
